Drinking
Irish Whiskey
|
|
| Irish Whiskey is
normally served by the measure, and until metric units were introduced
this was the quarter gill, the metric equivalent to 35ml in the North of
Ireland, and 35.2ml in the South of Ireland. Irish whiskey is popular
throughout not only Ireland but also many countries of the world and is
enjoyed in many ways this list is not definitive but gives an indication
of some of the more popular ways in which it is drunk.

|
| Neat As the name suggests the whiskey is enjoyed poured straight from the bottle at room temperature nothing is added no ice, no mixer, no nothing, the standard measure is simply enjoyed in its neat state as the distiller intended. |
|
| On the Rocks Popular in fancy nightclubs and cocktail parties your favorite whiskey is poured over several ice cubes and slowly sipped A method of drinking spirits which is popular in America. |
|
| Irish Coffee This method of enjoying Irish Whiskey is a personal favorite of my own especially in front of a warm fire on a winter evening. There are several ways that Irish coffee is currently prepared for example in England the cream is often poured unwhipped, some sad individuals even use aerosol cream. The following method however if carefully followed will provide the recipient with little room for complaint. |

| Method: Place
one measure of your favorite Irish whiskey
into an Irish Coffee glass, these are usually marked from the bottom up
showing the quantities of whisky, coffee and cream to be used, (although
some suggest it necessary, I do not pre warm the glass) add to the
whiskey one teaspoon of your favorite instant coffee. My own preference
is for Nescafe Gold Blend or an alternative quality freeze dried
brand. Next add some sugar to taste but never more that two spoonfuls.
Boil some water and ensure you have to hand some freshly whipped cream
The cream should be whipped sufficiently in order that it can stand
freely. Add the boiling water to the prepared glass stir. Now the tricky
bit, Using a warm spoon, either the one just used to stir the coffee or
another held under warm water, carefully take some of the whipped cream
and holding the spoon close to the surface of the coffee let the cream
slide of the spoon and float on top of the coffee. repeat as necessary
so that a layer of cream a good quarter of an inch floats on top of the
coffee. Serve immediately. The coffee should be drank "through"
the layer of fresh cream which should remain floating on the coffee. If
desired some freshly grated chocolate may be sprinkled on top of the
drink or as an alternative try some ground cinnamon. |
|
| Hot One Sometimes referred to as a "Hot Toddy" this is another pleasant way to enjoy Irish Whiskey. Place a measure of Irish Whiskey in a short glass, add a spoonful of brown or white sugar, a several of cloves and a dash of fresh lemon juice. Pour on boiling water and stir. This particular method of consuming Irish whisky comes highly recommended as a cure for the common cold! |
