Strangford Lough
![]() Outline Map of Ards Peninsula and Strangford Lough |
Southeast of Belfast in
Co. Down lies Strangford Lough.
Bordered on its eastern side by the Ards Peninsula, Strangford Lough has
been designated as an area of special scientific interest due to the
enormous diversity of wildlife to be found in this area. Portaferry at
the southern end of the Lough is home to
Exploris one of the most
modern aquariums centres in Europe with a diverse selection of marine
life on display. The centre includes a "Touch Tank" which is a
particular favourite of children. On the eastern shore of the lough is
the small village of Greyabbey
which takes its name from the Cistercian Abbey founded here in 1193. The Lough is home to many species of wild life and in winter the lough is covered by many migrating birds including Brent Geese. There are also a good number of seals which are easily observed as they bask at the low tide mark |
