Both the North and South of Ireland have a comprehensive network of Public Pay Phones, These are cheaper in the north of Ireland that the south. However if you plan to use pay phones a lot then it is generally cheaper to but a Phone Card. This is similar to a credit card and allows you to use special "Card" phones to make calls without having to insert money into the phone. Different cards are required in the North for BT phones from those used in the South in Telecom Eireann phones.
Cheap rate calls may be made between the North and South to each other and the UK between 6pm to 8am weekdays and all day at weekends. Times for off peak international calls vary depending on the country called but are similar to the above.
A word of warning Hotel phones charges are usually set considerably higher that pay phones some times by as much as 2-400% depending on the time of call and destination.
