Travelling
by Rail Train access in both the North and South of Ireland is not as comprehensive as Britain or some other European countries with the much of the North of Ireland totally inaccessible by rail. Whilst the South fairs better much of the popular West Coast of Ireland is not served at all for example there is no direct rail link between Galway and Sligo. And County Donegal has no Train Service at all. Rail Travel in Northern Ireland The Rail service in the North is operated by Northern Ireland Railways NIR with a high-speed train connection available from Belfast Direct to Dublin, operating normally 6 times a day. The only other lines out of Belfast go to Larne Harbour or westward to Londonderry via Coleraine near the Giants Causeway. Rail Travel in Southern Ireland In the south of Ireland The train service is run by Irish Rail Iarnród Éireann The network coverage is better that the North but again there are serious omissions. As mentioned above. Southern Ireland also has a small electric rail service known as DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) This line serves a number of stations between Bray to the south of Dublin and Howth to the North. A four-day Dublin Explorer ticket is available allowing travel on the DART and the Dublin bus service. |
