Travel by road
although Ireland is not a vast country do not expect to be able to see it all during a short stay, It is much better to be prepared in advance and plan what you want to do and where you want to go.
Many of the Islands magnificent attractions are located in remote parts of the island, and whilst the road system is under a constant upgrading and improvement program many roads are still quite narrow so extra time must be allowed for your journey.
Public Transport
whilst well catered for in the larger Cities is often very poor in rural areas with some of the worst affected areas having neither a Train or Bus service available.

By far the best way to see Ireland is by hiring a car and exploring the hidden treasures the organised tours either neglect or cannot readily gain access to. In both North and South of Ireland the basic rule to driving is Drive on the Left and Give Way to traffic approaching from the right.
Road Signs
In the south or Republic of Ireland may be confusing, as there is an ongoing metrication of distances. This means that some of the road signs are Black on white showing the distance in miles whilst others are Green and white showing the distance in Kilometres. (Its not the first time someone has read a sign that states Dublin 70 to find that 10 miles down the road the sign says Dublin 96) In the North of Ireland all Distances are measured in miles as in Britain.

Speed Limits
Both the North and South of Ireland have similar speed limit restrictions: 30mph - 50km/h in built up and suburban areas 60mph - 95km/h rural areas outside built up areas 70mph - 110km/h on motorways
This is only a general rule
On certain roads the speed limit is clearly marked and may be 40mph - 65km/h or 50mph - 80 km/h special rules apply to speed limits whilst towing a caravan or trailer. If you were planning to drive a worthwhile investment would be to purchase a copy of the Highway Code for Northern Ireland and the similar publication for the Republic of Ireland. Both are available from good bookstores.
